What an orphan topic is
An orphan topic is a query or need that connects to no useful resource on the web. Either the resource does not exist, or the need and the solution have never been linked.
Orphan topics cluster where no industry earns much: medical and psychological issues, technical damage, conflict. In those moments the only "answer" the web offers is an anti-solution – throw the device away, end the relationship, in the worst case end life. The gap is not commercial. It is human.
Orphan topics are the same territory the Ignorance Graph calls semantic vacua. Answering them earns trust, links and authority precisely because no incumbent is there. The revenue arrives through the bridge back to your offer, not through the orphan query itself.
How to find them
- List the difficult moments in your customer's system, not their keywords.
- For each, ask: does a clear, honest answer already rank? Usually not.
- Check there is real demand – people do feel this, even if they do not search it yet.
- Publish the first genuine answer and connect it to a fulfilled intention.
The lemons problem
Most people never search for a better option because they assume only one option exists – like being offered lemons as if there were no other fruit. That is a content gap of consciousness, not of detail. See the most impactful content gaps.
